Our story

We started Kook Boards because we believed something the surf world had forgotten: that being a beginner is brave. 

A 'kook' — in surfing slang — is someone who doesn't quite know what they're doing yet. Someone who drops in on the wrong wave, wipes out in shallow water, or paddles the wrong direction. 

We've all been there. And we think that moment — that awkward, humble, trying-your-best moment — deserves to be celebrated, not mocked. 

That's the spirit behind every board we make.  Each Kook Board begins as a blank piece of premium birch plywood, handcrafted here on the Gold Coast. Then it travels to the hands of a local artist — someone with a vision, a story, and a colour palette that's completely their own.

The result is a balance board that's also a piece of original art. When the collection sells out, those designs are gone. No reproductions. No second runs.  We believe in the mind-body connection. We believe in supporting local artists. We believe that the most beautiful training tools are the ones you actually want to use every day.
